Broadcom's stock wavered in early trading Thursday, initially sliding before paring some losses, as investors reacted to the chipmaker's latest earnings report. While the company posted strong quarterly results, its revenue outlook for the current period came in below analyst expectations, leaving many on Wall Street unimpressed.
The company guided for first-quarter revenue of around $14.6 billion, slightly short of the $14.7 billion consensus figure. That shortfall, even if modest, was enough to dampen enthusiasm for a stock that has already rallied sharply this year on the back of booming demand for AI networking chips and custom accelerators.
For the fiscal fourth quarter, Broadcom reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.42, beating the $1.38 estimate. Revenue rose 51% year over year to $14.05 billion, also ahead of projections. The company highlighted continued strength in its infrastructure software segment and record orders for its AI-related semiconductor products.
Still, the guidance overshadowed the beat. Analysts noted that Broadcom's growth trajectory remains solid, but the bar has been set very high after a massive run-up in the share price. The stock has more than doubled over the past twelve months, and any sign of deceleration, however slight, invites profit-taking.
Management pointed to ongoing supply chain improvements and a robust pipeline of custom AI chip designs from hyperscale customers. They reiterated confidence in the long-term opportunity, but near-term caution seems to be the prevailing mood among traders. The stock was last down about 1.5% in mid-morning trading, recovering from an initial drop of over 4%.
