Coinbase’s Trading Slump Shows Financial Platforms Need Users

Coinbase has spent years trying to reposition itself as more than just a place to buy and sell crypto. The company has pushed into stablecoins, custody services, staking, and even its own layer-2 network. But the second quarter 2026 earnings report makes one thing clear: when trading volumes drop, the rest of the business can't fully pick up the slack.

Revenue from trading fell sharply compared to the previous quarter, and that decline dragged down overall results. Transaction fees still make up the bulk of the company's income, despite all the talk about diversification. The problem is that most of the new services depend on the same thing as the exchange: user activity. If people aren't trading, they're not moving assets into staking pools, not paying for custody, and not using the network for much beyond occasional transfers.

This is a familiar story for any financial platform that tries to expand its offerings. Payment apps, brokerages, and even traditional banks all face the same issue. You can build a great product, but if the core transaction volume dries up, the whole ecosystem slows down. The user base is what drives everything else. Without active traders, the ancillary services become more like features than revenue streams.

Coinbase is not in trouble. It still holds a strong balance sheet and a dominant position in the US market. But the latest numbers are a reminder that no amount of new products can replace the simple need for people to actually use the platform. The company may want to be a financial super app, but for now, it still lives and dies by the trading screen.
