The conversation around self-care has long centered on bubble baths, meditation apps, and setting boundaries at work. But according to personal finance expert Nicole Lapin, the next big shift in wellness is happening where most people least expect it: inside their bank accounts. Lapin argues that financial wellness is the missing piece of modern self-care - a practice that protects not just your bank account, but your nervous system.
In a recent interview, Lapin explained that money stress is one of the biggest drivers of anxiety and burnout. She pointed out that ignoring bills, avoiding credit card statements, or living paycheck to paycheck creates a constant low-level hum of dread. That hum, she says, is the opposite of self-care. True wellness, in her view, means building a financial life that allows you to sleep at night.
Lapin suggests starting small. Instead of trying to overhaul your entire budget overnight, she recommends checking your account balance daily for just five minutes. That simple habit, she says, reduces the fear of the unknown. She also advises automating savings so that the decision to set money aside happens without willpower. Over time, these small actions build a sense of control.
The idea is gaining traction as more people realize that no amount of yoga or green juice can fix the stress of an overdraft fee. Lapin calls it "the next frontier" because it addresses the root cause of so much modern anxiety. Financial self-care, she says, is not about being rich. It is about being honest with yourself about where your money goes and giving yourself permission to make changes.
For those who feel overwhelmed, Lapin recommends starting with one bill paid early or one subscription canceled. The goal is not perfection but progress. She emphasizes that financial wellness is a practice, not a destination. And like any form of self-care, it requires consistency and compassion.
