NAB opens new type of bank branch with plans for national rollout: 'Rethinking'

National Australia Bank has unveiled a fresh take on the traditional bank branch, partnering with an unexpected collaborator to reshape the in-person banking experience. The Big Four lender announced the opening of its first "reimagined" store, with ambitions to roll out the model across the country.

The new branches are designed to move away from the standard teller queues and office desks. Instead, they feature open layouts, digital self-service zones, and dedicated spaces for financial health conversations. NAB says the shift is a direct response to changing customer habits, where people want quick digital transactions but still value face-to-face advice for major decisions like home loans or retirement planning.

What sets this concept apart is the collaboration. NAB has teamed up with a non-banking partner to bring in services that typically fall outside a bank's scope. While the bank did not name the partner in its initial announcement, sources suggest it involves a lifestyle or retail element aimed at making the branch a more inviting destination rather than a purely transactional stop.

The first location is already open in a major metropolitan area, and NAB has confirmed plans for a national rollout if the pilot proves successful. The move comes as other Australian banks experiment with smaller, tech-focused branches or close them entirely. NAB's approach suggests a belief that physical locations still matter, but they need to be fundamentally different from what customers have seen before.

"We are rethinking what a bank branch can be," a NAB spokesperson said. "This is about creating a space that feels useful and welcoming, not just a place to deposit a cheque." The bank expects to open several more of these hybrid branches over the next 12 months, targeting both city and suburban areas.
