The SNP's Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn, has issued a stark warning that the United Kingdom is heading toward an "economic catastrophe" unless the government provides emergency financial support. Speaking in the House of Commons, Flynn pressed ministers to act immediately, arguing that without a fresh injection of funding, households and public services across the country will face a sudden and severe drop-off in support.
Flynn described the current situation as a "cliff edge," pointing to rising energy bills, stagnant wages, and cuts to key benefits that are set to take effect in the coming months. He accused the UK government of ignoring the growing crisis and called for an urgent package of measures, including increased welfare payments and targeted help for the most vulnerable. "Families are already making impossible choices between heating and eating," he said. "Without action now, the consequences will be devastating."
The SNP leader's comments come amid growing pressure on Chancellor Rachel Reeves to deliver a more generous budget. Critics argue that the Treasury's current fiscal plans are too tight and risk deepening poverty, particularly in Scotland and other regions hit hardest by the cost-of-living squeeze. Flynn's demand for emergency support reflects a broader anxiety among opposition parties that the government is not moving fast enough to prevent a winter of hardship.
Westminster has so far resisted calls for a major spending boost, insisting that its existing plans will stabilise the economy. But with inflation still biting and public confidence low, Flynn's warning has added to the sense that time is running out.
