Subpoena of Sara Duterte’s financial docs ‘big step forward’

MANILA, Philippines - The Senate impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte took a significant turn on Monday as a key prosecution figure described the subpoena of her financial documents as a "big step forward."

House Deputy Minority Leader and prosecution panel member Chel Diokno made the statement after the Senate issued the order compelling the release of the Vice President's bank records and financial statements. Diokno argued that the documents are crucial to establishing a pattern of alleged misconduct and misuse of public funds during her tenure as Education Secretary and as Vice President.

"This is not just a procedural move. It represents a tangible breakthrough in our efforts to uncover the truth," Diokno said in a press briefing. "The financial trail often tells a story that public statements cannot. We believe these records will provide the missing links in our case."

The subpoena, which was approved by the Senate impeachment court, targets accounts linked to Duterte and several of her close associates. The prosecution team has alleged that the Vice President may have funneled government funds into private accounts and used her office for personal gain, accusations she has repeatedly denied.

Duterte's legal team has vowed to challenge the subpoena, calling it a "fishing expedition" and a violation of her right to privacy. They have filed a motion to quash the order, arguing that it lacks specific grounds and is based on hearsay.

Despite the opposition, Diokno expressed confidence that the Senate will uphold the subpoena. "We are not after a person. We are after the truth. If the Vice President has nothing to hide, she should welcome this scrutiny," he added.

The impeachment trial, which has been marked by heated exchanges and procedural delays, is expected to resume next week. The subpoenaed documents are anticipated to be a central piece of evidence in the prosecution's case.
