WhiteHorse Finance, which trades on Nasdaq under the symbol WHF, saw its second-quarter core net investment income slip to $4.7 million. That works out to $0.217 per share, a noticeable drop from the $5.6 million, or $0.253 per share, recorded in the first quarter of the year.
The company pointed to a couple of factors behind the decline. For one, the average size of its investment portfolio was smaller during the period. Also, the previous quarter included the initial shift of its Outward Hound position, which added to income at that time. Without that one-time boost, the latest quarter's numbers were always going to look softer by comparison.
Despite the lower earnings figure, management stressed that the portfolio remains stable. They noted that credit quality held up well across the board, with no new non-accruals added during the quarter. The firm also highlighted that its investment activity was steady, even if it was not as aggressive as in prior months.
Looking ahead, WhiteHorse Finance continues to focus on maintaining a solid dividend and preserving capital. The team said it sees a reasonable pipeline of new deals, though competition for quality assets stays intense. They remain cautious about deploying cash in a market where pricing can get stretched.
The company's net asset value per share also saw a slight adjustment, but executives framed it as a routine mark-to-market change rather than a sign of underlying trouble. the tone of the call was measured, with leadership emphasizing patience and selectivity over chasing growth for its own sake.
