Argentine state-controlled oil company YPF is moving forward with its ambitious liquefied natural gas project and hopes to lock in the final investment decision before the calendar flips to next year, according to chief executive Horacio Marin. Speaking at an industry gathering, Marin said the company is actively seeking financing partners for the multibillion-dollar undertaking, which would position Argentina as a major player in global gas markets.
The project, centered on the vast Vaca Muerta shale formation, has been a cornerstone of YPF's growth strategy. Marin emphasized that the company has already secured preliminary agreements with potential buyers and is now focused on closing the funding gap. He noted that several international banks and energy firms have expressed interest, though he declined to name specific parties.
Argentina has long struggled to capitalize on its unconventional reserves due to infrastructure bottlenecks and economic instability. YPF's push to export LNG would require massive investment in pipelines, processing plants, and export terminals. Marin acknowledged the challenges but insisted the timeline remains realistic, citing strong global demand for gas as Europe and Asia seek alternatives to traditional suppliers.
The executive also touched on regulatory hurdles, saying the government is working on incentives to attract foreign capital. If the project reaches completion, it could generate billions in annual export revenue and reshape the country's energy trade balance. Analysts remain cautious, noting that past Argentine energy megaprojects have faced delays. Still, Marin's confidence suggests YPF sees a narrow window to move quickly.
