A significant portion of the S&P 500 is struggling. More than a quarter of the index's components have fallen at least 40 percent from their recent peaks, a sign that the market's gains have been concentrated in a relatively small group of winners while many other names languish.
For investors willing to look past the broad selling pressure, this kind of environment can create opportunities. Several established technology companies now trade well below their highs, even though their underlying businesses remain profitable and their long term prospects have not changed dramatically.
Netflix stands out as a streaming leader that has already navigated a difficult period of subscriber growth and competition. Oracle has built a growing cloud infrastructure business that continues to win large enterprise contracts. ServiceNow remains a core platform for corporate workflow automation, with steady recurring revenue. AppLovin, meanwhile, has rebuilt its advertising engine around software and machine learning, improving margins in the process.
Each of these companies carries risk. A market that has punished so many stocks may keep doing so if interest rates stay elevated or if economic growth slows. But for investors with a long horizon, buying quality names during periods of pessimism has often proven rewarding. The key is patience and a willingness to tolerate further volatility before any rebound takes hold.
